Wilkes Earth Day Celebration

  • 3655 NE 154th Ave Portland, OR, 97230 United States (map)

Join us in celebrating Earth Day with friends and family at Wilkes Park with Columbia Slough Watershed Council, Verde, People of Color Outdoors, Friends of Trees, Audubon and Portland Parks and Recreation. All of these great organizations are joining forces for this community celebration to help improve your local neighborhood greenspaces at Wilkes Creek Headwaters and Natural Area and a family guided bird walk through the natural areas.

Wilkes Creek is one of the last remaining surface creeks providing clean, cold water directly to the Columbia Slough. This unique space is home to the endemic stumptown scud and is home to critical upland habitat that is rare in the watershed. The work we'll be doing this Earth Day will help restore this important clean water source.

This family friendly event will go from 10:00 - 2:00 pm and include:

  • Litter Cleanup and native plant mulching (10:00 - 12:30)

  • Free LUNCH! (12:00 - 1:00)

  • Guided bird walk (1:00 - 2:00)

  • Community Organization information and tabling

  • Opportunities to win FREE trees and native plants for your home

  • Opportunities to Learn about Portland Parks & Recreation's Wilkes Creek Headwaters Master Planning Process

This event will center around Wilkes Park, where food, tools and community tabling will be set up. Columbia Slough Watershed Council will lead a group across the street to Wilkes Creek Natural Area to mulch native plants and remove litter/invasive species. Friends of Trees and Portland Parks and Recreation will lead a group to Wilkes Creek Headwaters one block south for the same tasks. The bird walk will leave from Wilkes Park after lunch to and walk through both natural areas to observe the birds enjoying the space you just improved! (see map below for details)

This event is part of the Wilkes Greening project a collaboration, Columbia Slough Watershed Council, Verde, Friends of Trees, Audubon and Portland Parks and Recreation to improve the areas environmental wealth, enhance the natural areas and provide community and educational programming to the neighborhood. This event is rain or shine! We provide gloves, tools, plants, and planting instructions. Please dress comfortably for the weather, bring water, wear sturdy shoes and long pants, and in case of rain, bring rain gear!
